Choosing your earrings | the complete guide
Which earrings suit you best?
Jewelry is a true fashion accessory. It can enhance the part of your body where it's worn or draw attention away from an area you're self-conscious about. It can add style to even the most basic outfit. Earrings are particularly important because they are placed on a central part of your body: your face. Their choice can be based on different criteria: face shape, haircut, presence of glasses, etc. How to choose your earrings well? All our advice in this article.
Choosing your earrings based on your face shape
There are several different face shapes in the general population. Each has its own characteristics and can be highlighted in multiple ways. The choice of your earrings is one way to enhance your features. First, it's important to know your face shape to know what suits you best. Got it? Here's our advice for each face type.
The round face
A round face has very soft contours, it is as long as it is wide, and the jawline is not very defined. To break up this roundness and elongate the face, long and thin earrings are ideal. Avoid studs and overly rounded jewelry that will flatten the features.
The square face
A square face is also as long as it is wide. But the jawline is more pronounced, and the chin is slightly angular. Rounded earrings will help soften your features. No matter their size, you can wear studs as well as hoops.
The rectangular face
A rectangular face is quite similar to a square shape. The cheekbones are often prominent. The jawline is wide and pronounced. However, it is more elongated. Here, too, the aim is to soften the features and contrast with the marked angles. Rounded earrings will be perfect. They should not be chosen too long to maintain good balance.
The oval face
An oval face is characterized by a length greater than the width of the cheekbones, and a forehead larger than the jaw. The angles of the face are rather rounded. This is considered the most harmonious shape. If this is your case: good news! You can wear anything. Studs, hoops, long, small, medium, etc.: you're spoiled for choice, so indulge yourself!
The heart-shaped face
You have a heart-shaped face if your forehead is the widest part and your chin is pointed and narrow. To balance the proportions, choose earrings that have a shape opposite to that of your face, meaning narrow at the top and wide at the bottom.
The triangular face
A triangular face is the opposite of a heart-shaped face. In this case, your jawline is the widest part. Your forehead, on the other hand, is narrow. The goal will be the same: to harmonize volumes. Therefore, choose jewelry that is wide at the top and tapers at the bottom.
The diamond face
You have a diamond face if your cheekbones are pronounced and are the widest part of your face. Your forehead is narrow. Your jawline is rather angular and your chin pointed. Opt for dangling earrings that will add volume to the lower part of your face.
Considering your haircut
Your hair is an integral part of your face. It is therefore important to consider it when choosing your earrings. You won't wear the same jewelry if your hair is short or long.
If you've opted for a short cut, you can (almost) wear anything; the jewelry will inevitably be highlighted. However, long earrings can feminize a tomboyish hairstyle.
If you have medium or long hair and wear it down, dangling jewelry might not stand out as much because it could be "lost" in your hair. Opt for colorful and/or voluminous earrings that will be more easily distinguishable. If your hair is tied up, you'll have a wider choice, as earrings will inevitably be noticed due to your hairstyle.
Finally, if you wear bangs, the eye is naturally drawn to the upper part of your face. The goal, therefore, is to balance the volumes. Long earrings will consequently be ideal, as they will bring attention back to the lower part of the face. It's even better if they are rounded, because they will contrast with the angular side of the cut.
Harmonizing your glasses and earrings
Glasses are a fashion accessory in their own right. They are also (and above all!) a necessity for some. So we can't ask you to choose between your glasses and your earrings! The ideal is to have both coexist on your face as pleasantly as possible.
First, you need to consider the appearance of your glasses. Generally, they are adapted to the shape of your face according to the criteria mentioned above. You will then just need to balance everything: rounded earrings if your glasses are round, more angular jewelry if they are square or rectangular.
Next, we try to harmonize the colors of these two accessories. If your frames are gold, opt for gold jewelry; the same applies to silver. If your glasses are colored, choose earrings whose shade blends well with that of your frames.
Finally, as we've already mentioned, balance the volumes. If your frames are imposing, choose finer and more discreet earrings. Conversely, if your glasses are small, don't hesitate to wear more voluminous jewelry. These techniques will help you not to overload your face, not to weigh it down, but on the contrary, to illuminate it.
