Each month of the year is associated with a gem: these are called birthstones or monthly stones. They are said to reflect the character of those born during that period and offer them protection. The birthstone for July is the ruby. This red stone perfectly matches the hot season and the assertive temperament of Leos and Cancers. We'll tell you more.
Ruby, July's birthstone
Monthly stones refer to the gems associated with a particular month of the year. They are said to reflect the characteristics of people born during that period. The list as we know it today was developed in 1912 by the American Gem Society. It is inspired by the writings of two figures from late antiquity: Flavius Josephus, a Roman historian, and Saint Jerome, a monk, Bible translator, and founder of the Latin Church.
They believed that texts from the Old and New Testaments associated precious stones with the months. One writing mentions armor made of four rows of stones engraved with the names of the twelve sons of Israel. The other mentions twelve stones decorated with the names of the apostles as constituting the foundations of the wall of the Celestial Jerusalem.
According to this list, the month of July is associated with the ruby. Its red color perfectly corresponds to this hot season, but also to the assertive character of those born in July. The astrological sign of Leo, covering the period from July 23 to August 22, is also a fire sign.
