The different types of ear jewelry
Earrings play a central role in your adornments. They are worn on the face and can easily enhance it. There are several types: hoops, studs, sleepers, drops, etc. To help you choose, the Camille Colette Studio team has put together a presentation of the different types of earrings, from their shape to their history. Let us tell you all about them.
Hoop earrings
Hoop earrings are earrings in the shape of more or less large and thick rings. They can be smooth, ornate, or even set with stones. There are also half-hoops. In France, they owe their name to their history. During the era of slavery, these rings were the only jewels allowed for exploited Antillean women.
In the 1960s, during the Black Power movement, many activists wore hoops, like Angela Davis. These jewels then represented a symbol of pride and demand for Black women. They have since become widespread worldwide.

Drop earrings
Drop earrings generally refer to all earrings that have one or more suspended motifs. They can consist of a stone attached to the lobe that holds another dangle, or a motif suspended from the ear by a hook.
Sleeper earrings

Sleeper earrings are characterized by their hinged clasp that surrounds the earlobe; this clasp holds a single suspended motif, usually a stone.
These earrings have existed since the mid-19th century. At the time, new hairstyles appeared. These hairstyles covered women's ears, leading them to turn to other accessories, especially hair accessories. Consequently, ear jewelry was invented that would not damage hairstyles and could also be worn at night to prevent the lobe from closing. This is where their name "dormeuses" (sleepers) comes from.
Girandole earrings

Girandole earrings appeared in the 17th century. Inspired by the shape of chandeliers, they consist of three or five dangles attached to a suspended motif. Their name comes from the Latin gyrare which means "to turn," and the Italian giranda which translates to "bundle" or "fountain."
Poissarde earrings

Poissarde earrings are oval or round earrings adorned on the front with an enameled plate or stones. Their characteristic S-shaped clasp is distinctive. They owe their name to the 19th-century fishwives who wore them.
